Biography
Joyce Sims came from Rochester, New York, a singer, songwriter, and keyboardist who wrote her own material at a time when few dance artists did. Sleeping Bag Records released “(You Are My) All and All” in 1986, and the single’s warm blend of freestyle rhythm and soul vocal made it a New York club standard.
“Come Into My Life” followed in 1987 and became her biggest record, an international hit that reached the top ten in the UK and established her far beyond the club scene. Her debut album of the same name showcased a writer as much as a singer.
Sims passed away in October 2022. “All and All” remains her freestyle cornerstone, a record that bridged the gap between the genre’s drum-machine energy and classic songwriting, and it appears on this site’s Top 100.
