Biography
Starpoint came from Maryland as an R&B and funk band years before freestyle existed, led by vocalist Renée Diggs. “Object of My Desire,” released on Elektra in 1985, crossed the band into the dance world that freestyle audiences were building, and the genre’s DJs claimed the record as their own.
The band kept charting on R&B radio through the late 1980s, but “Object of My Desire” is the record that put them permanently on freestyle playlists, one of the genre’s favorite adoptions from outside its own borders.
It holds a spot on this site’s Top 100 by Spotify play data, alongside Information Society’s “Running” in the small club of records freestyle took in and never gave back.
