In a genre dominated by solo acts and studio creations, The Cover Girls stood out as a genuine group—three voices harmonizing over some of freestyle’s most polished productions, delivering hit after hit through the late 80s and into the 90s.

Formed in New York City in 1986, the original lineup brought together Louise “Angel” Mercado (sometimes credited as Angel Clivillés), Caroline Jackson, and Sunshine Wright. The trio emerged from the same fertile scene that produced Sweet Sensation and Exposé, but carved out their own identity with a blend of tight harmonies, girl-group charm, and irresistible hooks.

Their 1986 debut single “Show Me” announced their arrival with authority—a driving freestyle track that hit #4 on the Dance charts and crossed over to pop radio. The song’s combination of romantic longing and dancefloor energy established the template for everything that followed.

“Because of You” (1987) pushed them further into the mainstream, reaching the Billboard Hot 100 and becoming one of the group’s signature tracks. Their cover of Rose Royce’s “Wishing on a Star” (1992) demonstrated their versatility, transforming the classic ballad into a freestyle-tinged slow jam that introduced them to a new generation of fans.
