Biography
C-Bank was a studio project of producer John Robie, one of the architects of New York electro. “One More Shot,” released on Next Plateau in 1982, put Jenny Burton’s vocal over a stark, synthesized arrangement that pointed directly at what freestyle would become. Many histories of the genre cite it as a foundation record.
Robie’s fingerprints were all over the era. He co-created Afrika Bambaataa’s “Planet Rock” sound and produced Planet Patrol’s “Play at Your Own Risk,” and C-Bank served as his outlet for vocal-driven club records. Later C-Bank singles, including “Won’t Stop Loving You,” continued through the mid-1980s with rotating vocalists.
“One More Shot” outlived the project. It remains a permanent record in the freestyle and electro canon, sampled, replayed, and covered for four decades, and it anchors C-Bank’s place on this site.
