Judy Torres

Biography

Judy Torres grew up in the Bronx and was singing opera before Profile Records signed her at nineteen. “No Reason to Cry” arrived in 1987 and became a New York club anthem. “Come Into My Arms” followed in 1988 and cemented her as one of the genre’s defining voices. Fans and radio started calling her the Queen of Freestyle, and the title stuck.

“Love You, Will You Love Me” extended her run into the 1990s, and unlike most of her peers she never really left the stage. Torres became a fixture of New York radio as an on-air personality at WKTU, keeping freestyle in rotation for a city that never stopped requesting it.

She continues to headline freestyle concerts across the country, often closing shows with the three songs featured on this site. Few artists have stayed as continuously connected to this music and its audience.
