Biography
Planet Patrol was assembled in the studio by Arthur Baker and John Robie, the production team fresh off inventing the “Planet Rock” sound with Afrika Bambaataa. “Play at Your Own Risk,” released on Tommy Boy in 1982, put doo-wop-schooled group vocals over that same electro architecture and became a foundation record for everything freestyle would build.
The group toured and recorded a full album for Tommy Boy, but the single is the monument: sampled, replayed, and cited for four decades.
Robie’s other studio project, C-Bank, has its own page on this site. Between the two of them, half of freestyle’s DNA is accounted for. “Play at Your Own Risk” sits on this site’s Top 100 by Spotify play data.
