Stevie B Biography

Born Steven Hill Bernard on April 18, 1958, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Stevie B earned the title “King of Freestyle” through a run of dance floor anthems and crossover ballads that defined the genre’s commercial peak.

Stevie B came up through South Florida’s vibrant Latin freestyle scene in the mid-80s, releasing early tracks on local labels before signing with LMR Records. His 1987 single “Party Your Body” became a freestyle staple, its infectious synth hooks and call-and-response vocals making it an enduring club classic. He followed with “Dreamin’ of Love” and “In My Eyes,” building a loyal following on the regional dance circuit.

His breakthrough came with 1988’s “Spring Love (Come Back to Me),” a bittersweet midtempo track that crossed over to pop radio, reaching #43 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song showcased Stevie B’s ability to balance uptempo freestyle energy with genuine emotion—a combination that would become his signature.

But it was 1990’s “Because I Love You (The Postman Song)” that made him a household name. The tender ballad topped the Billboard Hot 100 for four weeks, becoming one of freestyle’s few #1 pop hits and proving the genre could deliver more than just dance tracks.

Beyond performing, Stevie B built a legacy as a producer and label executive, helping develop other freestyle artists and keeping the sound alive through decades of shifting trends. He remains active on the touring circuit, headlining freestyle festivals and reunion shows across the country.
