Taylor Dayne Biography
Born Leslie Wunderman on March 7, 1962, in Baldwin, New York, Taylor Dayne emerged from the Long Island club scene to become one of the defining voices of late-80s dance-pop and freestyle.
After years performing in local bands and recording demos, Dayne caught the attention of Arista Records. Her 1987 debut single “Tell It to My Heart” was an immediate smash, hitting #7 on the Billboard Hot 100 and topping dance charts worldwide. The track’s pounding Hi-NRG production and Dayne’s powerful, soulful vocals made it a crossover hit that still packs floors today.
Her debut album of the same name spawned three more Top 10 hits: “Prove Your Love,” “I’ll Always Love You,” and “Don’t Rush Me.” The follow-up, Can’t Fight Fate (1989), delivered her first #1 pop single, “Love Will Lead You Back,” along with “With Every Beat of My Heart” and “I’ll Be Your Shelter.”
Across her first two albums, Dayne racked up seven consecutive Top 10 singles—a feat unmatched by any debut artist since the Beatles. Her voice—big, belting, and undeniably New York—bridged freestyle’s club roots with mainstream pop appeal.
Dayne continued recording through the 90s and 2000s, releasing Soul Dancing (1993), Naked Without You (1998), and Satisfied (2008). She remains active on the concert circuit, a staple of freestyle reunion shows and casino tours.
